Pressures on new and young motorists are heightening with a price comparison website revealing a 17-year-old male can now expect to pay £2,841 for car insurance - £1,200 more than a female driver of the same age. To add to their financial woes, 53 per cent of learner drivers are taking more than one driving test meaning more outlay on lessons and tests.

When it comes to car insurance, young drivers pay the price for reputation with figures from the Association of British Insurers showing that 18-year-olds are responsible for around 50 collisions on the UK's roads every day. Men are penalised heavily because Home Office statistics show they commit nine times as many motoring offences as women.

However, you don't have to pay a ludicrously high premium for car insurance - there are ways to win favour with the insurers and reduce premiums:

• Pick your car carefully.Choose a vehicle with a low insurance group, a small engine and avoid modifications.

• Type of policy.Don't pay over the odds for comprehensive cover if your vehicle has a low value. A third party, fire and theft policy can help to reduce the cost of young driver car insurance.

• Security. Look to enhance security by asking your insurer if it can recommend an immobiliser or alarm system in return for a discount. Park in a garage overnight or at least in a well-lit area.

• Mileage limit. If you don't need to drive during the commuter rush hour inform your insurer. Also consider a mileage limit if you plan to use the car for limited periods.

• Drive safely. Stay accident free to build up a no-claims discount. Many insurers offer rapid-bonus schemes to young drivers.
